Affiliate Disclosure

Last updated: July 3, 2026

The Understory participates in affiliate marketing programs. This page explains what that means, how we use affiliate links, and our commitment to editorial independence.

What is an affiliate link?

An affiliate link is a tracked URL that earns a small commission when you click through and make a purchase or booking. The price you pay is the same — sometimes exactly the same as going directly — and a percentage of the transaction goes to The Understory at no additional cost to you.

How we mark affiliate content

Any article containing affiliate links includes a disclosure notice at the top of the article. The notice reads: "This article contains affiliate links."

We do not use affiliate links in Living Guide modules unless explicitly stated and relevant (e.g., a specific booking tool we genuinely recommend).

Our commitment to editorial independence

Affiliate relationships do not influence our editorial recommendations. We do not recommend products or services solely because they pay affiliate commissions. If we recommend something, it is because we believe it genuinely serves the reader — the affiliate income is incidental, not the reason for the recommendation.

We do not accept paid placements — where a third party pays to be included in an article or recommended as a top choice. If this policy ever changes, we will disclose it explicitly.

Current affiliate programs

The Understory may participate in affiliate programs including (but not limited to):

  • Booking platforms (accommodation, transport)
  • Travel insurance providers
  • Equipment and gear retailers
  • Software and apps relevant to China travel

Specific programs vary and may change over time. The disclosure notice on individual articles reflects current affiliate relationships in that content.
